We originally started off as a pop up store over the Summer 15/16 period, but with the overwhelming support and encouragement from locals and travellers alike, we took the plunge and made it permanent. To find out more about our beginnings, check out the news article here.

Taute Gallery & Tours is a whanau (family) enterprise that was established in December 2015.
Taute - is pronounced "tau" like the toe of your foot, and "te" like to tear a piece of paper.
Translated it means to "protect and nurture".
It was also our fathers name. He was named after a fish that our grandmother used to crave when she was pregnant. That fish is no longer caught in our area.
Our whanau established the business to both promote and retain our toi (arts) and matauranga (traditional knowledge and practices) so that it is not lost to future generations, like the fish was. We wanted a space to protect and nurture local artists and practitioners.
Taute was created.
Our whanau have lived here for generations, and we continue to do so. We know our area, our history, and the people. We see daily the amazing talent of local artists, the richness of our resources, and the significant potential for our community to develop quality products and services for the world. Our mother was a weaver, so was her mother, and so are we now, and so will our children be. We are confident, it wont be lost.
We hope you enjoy our beautiful piece of paradise and the taonga (precious works) of our talented community as much as we do.
