Its taken me a year to be convinced of the benefits of essential oils.
My sister is a Gold leader for doTERRA essential oils and was always giving me lots of advice and samples to try...that I kept lying I was trying but never was. In fact, I had unfollowed her on Facebook and would make stuff up every time she asked me about one of her posts or something about the oils. Bad sister I was!
I was fully sceptical and resistant to all that "alternative, hippy stuff" she was into. Yet the irony was, we grew up with Rongoa (Maori healing practices) being used daily by our grandparents. I know lots of Rongoa practitioners and we even have weekly Rongoa classes at the Gallery. I'm surrounded by natural remedies that I regularly use, yet for some reason, I was highly sceptical of essential oils. I could trust NZ grown plants and traditional practices, but I couldn't trust others. Quite silly when I think back on it now.
But then, I started trying things, in part, just to shut my sister up, but also, like lots of parents, as my son grows (he's 5 now) I'm becoming more conscious of everything around him. From what he puts in his mouth, to what we clean the house with, put on him, and expose him to. So I started with the "easy" stuff - replacing cleaning products at home with low tox products, simple items like hand wash, air freshener, carpet cleaner, spray n wipe etc. They all worked, yet in my mind, i still thought, yeah yeah AND?
Winter came and I tried some of the immune blends, in rollers and a diffuser, and didn't really notice until I saw other people that we had not been sick for some time. I had also started using lavender on my sons feet and spine to help him fall sleep at night, and then have a good restful sleep till the morning. I started to really notice a difference there, but still in my mind I thought - oh hes probably just getting older and getting into a better sleeping routine.
Talk about resistant!
But I couldn't deny the "aha" moment when we had to have his 2 front teeth removed. Two teeth were growing behind his baby teeth and while sometimes they will just naturally shift the baby ones forward to fall out, this wasn't happening and we had to have them removed. He was very brave and great for the dentist who put his front mouth to sleep and removed the baby teeth. I wasn't doing so well with it all though!. After it was done, the dentist gave me a prescription for child painkillers and said it was likely once the injection wore off he would be in a lot of pain and I should likely keep him home from daycare the next day or two and take it easy.
My sister encouraged me to try some essential oils as a safe, gentle alternative to the painkillers and this time I agreed. I made up a roller with Frankincense and Lavendar and rolled it on the outside of his jawline. I did it once when the injection wore off, again went he went to sleep that night, and then again in the morning. Now unless he has a very high pain threshold for a child, he was fine, he had absolutely no pain and was back at daycare the next day.
It was my first real "aha" moment, when I couldn't fob it off to some other possible reason, where it actually made me stop and think - is there something to essential oils? And so the journey to find out more began, this time, because I really wanted to know more! And little did I know, there was going to be a ton more "wow this shit really works" moments along the way.
